Elderly man dies after swimming during thunderstorm in Stanley

A man in his 80s has died after getting caught in a thunderstorm during an early morning swim.

The man, surnamed Leung, was at Stanley Beach for his regular swim at around 7:45am while a thunderstorm warning was in force, sources on the scene told Apple Daily.

At 8:35am, the Amber Rainstorm warning was hoisted and most swimmers came back to shore. However, fellow beachgoers who regularly swam with Leung noticed that his clothes were still hanging in the locker room, and realised he was still in the water.

Concerned that he was neither onshore or on a pontoon, they notified lifeguards, who went looking for the Leung.

At 9:57am, lifeguards reported the incident to police, after failing to find the swimmer themselves.

Divers from the Fire Services Department searched the area and found Leung about an hour later, about five metres offshore.

He was rushed to Eastern Hospital unconscious, but declared dead shortly afterwards.
