Curry With a Bite: Woman finds metal staple in mouthful of pork at Tsuen Wan restaurant

“Staple food”: a term usually used to describe a basic or necessary foodstuff. In the case of one unfortunate Hong Kong woman, it’s food that contains a literal metal staple, like the type some curious kid you know has definitely pierced their hand with.

At 2pm yesterday, a saleswoman surnamed Lui was having lunch with a friend at the Tsuen Wan outlet of Satay King, a fast food chain. She told Apple Daily that she felt a sharp pain when she bit into a piece of pork that came with her curry set.

Upon examination, it appeared that there was a one-centimetre-long sharp metallic object embedded into the meat, which had cut Lui’s tongue.

After she informed staff at the restaurant about what she suspected to be a staple in her pork chop, they reportedly offered to compensate her for her lunch (a princely HKD60). When she declined, staff offered her what is apparently the next best thing: a bottle of chilli oil, just to rub salt in the wound (or chilli in the cut, to be precise).

After Lui rejected offers for meal coupons and various other forms of compensation, the exasperated restaurant manager reportedly exclaimed, “It doesn’t matter, you’re going to report it to the [Food and Environmental Hygiene Department] no matter what!”

So she did.

FEHD staff went to the restaurant at 3pm and took samples for testing, while a member of staff tried futilely to conceal her identity from Apple Daily reporters by hiding behind a menu.

Not the sharpest tack in the box, eh?
