Dragonair plane makes emergency landing after ‘smoke and flames’ seen coming out of engine en route to Phuket

A Dragonair-operated Airbus A321-200 was forced to make an emergency landing at Hong Kong airport this week after smoke and fire was seen coming from an engine mid-flight.

Flight KA-212 for Phuket, carrying 148 passengers, had just taken off from HKIA at 8:55am on Tuesday when a “banging sound” was heard and smoke and sparks of fire coming out of the left engine, according to a flight attendant’s Facebook post, Apple Daily reports.

According to the Aviation Herald, the crew contacted departure control to say that the left engine was “on fire”. The crew stopped the flight from climbing at 3,000 feet, but then continued climbing to 7,000 feet to burn off fuel.

The plane made an emergency landing at Hong Kong airport around 40 minutes after departure, and no injuries were reported. Following a four-hour delay, passengers were taken to Phuket on a replacement plane.

Airline representatives said that there was no fire, but the engine’s exhaust gas temperature had been higher than average, prompting the crew to turn back.

The spokesperson stated that the aircraft is being inspected and a report will be submitted to the Civil Aviation Department.
