4 suspects arrested for allegedly scamming 2 sisters out of HKD3.6 million in family savings

Four men and women, between 26 to 61 years of age, have been arrested for allegedly conning two sisters out of their family’s life savings in an online love scam last month.

Yesterday evening, police officers from the Yuen Long District Crime Squad arrested a man, who allegedly seduced one of the sisters, and his wife in Mong Kok, Oriental Daily reports. The couple is believed to have “masterminded” the scam.

Officers seized HKD600,000 worth of cash and jewellery from their apartment, as well as a Mercedes-Benz car worth HKD300,000.

Police also apprehended the man’s mother in the early hours of today at The Parcville, a luxury residential estate in Yuen Long. (What is this, some kind of family business?!)

Officers seized jewellery worth approximately HKD300,000 from the flat and believe a bank account under her name, which contains around HKD800,000, is connected to the scam.

Another man was later arrested in Sau Mau Ping on suspicion of handling stolen goods in relation to the case, HK01 reports

Last month, a 24-year-old woman surnamed Sin said she had been fooled into giving her “boyfriend”, whom she had met online, her family’s entire life savings (around HKD3.6 million).

The family had put down a HKD1 million deposit on a new home, but their daughter worried they wouldn’t have enough money left after they bought their home.

Her boyfriend, who she knew as Thomas, said he would help the Sins invest their savings. The 24-year-old made multiple transfers to Thomas’ bank account totalling around HKD1 million.

Later, Thomas approached Sin’s 26-year-old sister and asked for the rest of the family’s money – around HKD2 million – to make more investments. However, the sisters said he disappeared once he received the money.
