Do The Electric Ride: Hong Kong to host its biggest motorsports event ever, the Formula E ePrix

In big news for electric cars, the Fragrant Harbour, and local motorsports, Hong Kong is set to host the first-ever ePrix put on by Formula E, the world’s first all-electric motor racing series. The event will be part of the third season of the FIA (International Automobile Federation) Formula E Championship and is expected to be a pioneering milestone for Hong Kong’s motorsports culture, as it will be the city’s biggest event yet.

The ePrix will take place on the weekend of October 8 and 9 at the Central Harbourfront. The approximately two-kilometre long urban circuit will run between Lung Wo Road and the Star Ferry, featuring long straights (running from Admiralty, past Tamar Park and ending at the Hong Kong Observation Wheel), hairpin turns and, of course, striking views of the harbour and skyline.

Several grandstands, seating 6,000 total, will be set up along the circuit’s 555-metre main straight on Lung Wo Road for speed junkies to watch the racecars zoom by. There will be 10 teams of two drivers, including Team Jaguar Land Rover, which will be returning to race after a 12-year absence from the motorsports world.

“Formula E is shaping the future of sports events, where entertainment and motorsport meet to create the ultimate event experience,” said Mr. Alan Fang, CEO of Formula Electric Racing Hong Kong.

Commerce secretary Gregory So clearly understands what the ePrix is all about, saying at a press conference that the race will “enrich the tourism appeal of Hong Kong and reinforc[e] our position as an events capital of Asia”. Yeah! What he said!

If the future of sustainable transport is not enough to make you wet your pants with excitement, there will also be an “eVillage” set up for extra fun and entertainment. The eVillage will feature various acts and performances on multiple stages, children’s play areas and numerous game booths, exhibits and activities, including a simulator racing contest.

Event organizers expect 30,000 people to attend, so start your eco-friendly engines, Coconauts!
