Holy Smokes! MTR passenger puffs on cigarettes, drinks beer on busy train to Hong Kong public’s horror

A man was filmed filling an MTR train with cigarette smoke and bad vibes over the weekend, sparking the fury of his fellow passengers.

A woman surnamed Leung told Apple Daily she noticed the smell of smoke as soon as she boarded the Kwun Tong Line train at Yau Tong, at around 6:30pm on Saturday.

“I turned around and saw this guy sitting there, having a cigarette. A woman went up to him and asked if he was for real, then pulled the emergency call handle.”

MTR workers boarded the train and seemingly convinced the man to put his cigarette out.

However, Leung said he waited one or two stops after MTR staff left the train and lit up a fresh cigarette while swigging from a can of beer and blaring music from his phone.

Disregarding that he broke three MTR by-laws (by smoking on a train, consuming a beverage in a paid area, and generating noise with a portable device), that’s just a triple dick move. Has he ever been on a train? Has he ever been on public transport? Or functioned as a human being outside his own home?

When he was confronted by other passengers, the man reportedly retorted, “This is Hong Kong, I’m free to do what I want.”

Later, more MTR workers boarded the train at Wong Tai Sin, at which point the sly smoker “immediately threw his cigarette onto the train tracks”, according to Leung.

A spokesperson for MTR Corp. said a passenger was verbally warned about smoking at Ngau Tau Kok Station, but staff didn’t find anyone smoking cigarettes when they boarded at Wong Tai Sin.
