Woman suspected to scam strangers by asking for spare change for MTR fare, sparking netizen rage

Photos of a young woman apparently taking advantage of well-meaning strangers has raised suspicions and inspired rage among Hong Kong’s easily irked online populace.

In a well-oiled routine, the woman stops commuters near the ticket machines at an MTR station and asks for spare change, apparently claiming that she doesn’t have enough money to buy a train ticket. It seems that most people will give her a few coins out of generosity. And then she does it again, and again… and again.

On Monday, a netizen called Fola Ng shared a post on Facebook saying she’d witnessed the woman doing this multiple times at Central Station, and warned fellow Hongkongers not fall for her trick.

Ng said in her post that she has already notified MTR staff.

The woman has apparently been spotted doing the same thing in other MTR stations, such as Jordan and Mong Kok, and at various bus stops in Nathan Road and Sham Shui Po.

A Facebook user by the name of Ne Lee shared photos of the same woman back in May. The post went viral at the time, and now netizens are wondering how long she’s actually been doing this for.
