Bo Lo B-ow! Tourist served pineapple bun with a syringe in it by TST restaurant

Every Hongkonger knows the humble pineapple bun. Its enduring popularity means you can consume delicious bo lo baos any which way you like… although we’d normally expect additions like butter or jam. You know, edible things… not needles.

At 5pm yesterday, a Singaporean tourist snacking on a pineapple bun at Yuen Kee cha chaan teng in Tsim Sha Tsui stopped halfway through when she found the tip of a syringe embedded in her bun, Apple Daily reports.

A netizen named Kuen Li said he had witnessed the incident and posted photos of the bread and restaurant to a popular Facebook group for Tai Po residents. In it, Li said the tourist didn’t want monetary compensation, and simply asked to speak with the restaurant owner.

When no such person showed up after 30 minutes, she reported the incident to the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department. A spokesperson for the FEHD told Apple Daily that they would follow up with the restaurant.

While some commenters on Facebook have simply expressed their disgust towards the photograph and suggested the victim get her blood screened, others have been busy trying to explain how exactly the syringe got stuck in the bun.

One netizen theorised that whoever baked the bun was a drug addict, and had accidentally snapped the tip of the needle off in the baking tray after getting high. Another person joked that the syringe was merely being used to inject “pineapple juice into the pineapple bun”.
