80-year-old woman plunges to death in Hysan Place shopping mall

An 80-year-old woman plunged to her death in a Causeway Bay shopping mall yesterday.

The woman, surnamed Lam, lived in Sai Kung with her husband and was reported to have been recently diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer.

Yesterday morning, she told her husband that she was going out to buy groceries, but never returned, Ming Pao reports.

At 3pm, Lam was found unconscious with head injuries on the first floor of Hysan Place and rushed to hospital, where she was declared dead. Police officers who arrived at the mall found a chair on the third floor, which they believe Lam used to climb over a safety railing.

While no suicide note was found on the scene, police said that they do not believe Lam’s death to be suspicious.

If you are experiencing depression or suicidal thoughts, please call the Samaritans’ 24-hour hotline at 2896 0000 for help.
