Heavy Metal: Man tries to smuggle 30kg of gold bars into Hong Kong

A man trying to drive across the border into Hong Kong yesterday (Aug. 17) was arrested after Customs found a sizeable stash of gold hidden in the body of his car.

The suspect, a 34-year-old man, was attempting to enter Hong Kong via Shenzhen Bay Control Point. Upon inspecting his car, Customs officers discovered 30 slabs of gold weighing a total of 30 kilogrammes concealed near the car’s front tyres.

We’ve heard about gold plated rims, but this is on a whole ‘nother level.

The slabs were estimated to have a value of HKD11 million. The driver was arrested and later released on bail, pending further investigation.

The maximum penalty for importing unmanifested cargo is a fine of HKD2 million and seven years’ imprisonment.
