Man who allegedly cheated girlfriend out of HKD1.65 million arrested

A married Portuguese national who allegedly cheated his girlfriend out of HKD1.65 million was arrested over the weekend.

The 49-year-old man, surnamed Costa, met his 58-year-old girlfriend, who is also married, early last year in the restaurant where she waits tables, Apple Daily reports.

Costa, who claimed to be a businessman, allegedly began asking to borrow money from his girlfriend, surnamed Ng, early last month.

She reportedly lent him a total of HKD1.5 million and HKD150,000 worth of jewellery to help him out of unspecified “financial difficulties”. However, Ng confided in a friend that she suspected Costa was avoiding paying her back.

Knowing that the couple was supposed to meet at Kowloon MTR Station on Saturday afternoon, Ng’s friend called the cops, who apprehended Costa.

He was arrested on suspicion of obtaining property by deception. An investigation by police officers from Yau Tsim District is underway.
