36 live sea turtles rescued from fishing boat off the coast of Hong Kong’s Lamma Island

Although cartoon turtles are notoriously tough, real ones are unfortunately rather helpless.

A total of 36 live sea turtles were rescued from a fishing boat at the Sok Kwu Wan Fish Culture Zone on Lamma Island on Friday Sept. 30.

While we wish they had all whipped out the nunchucks and gone mutant on their captors’ asses, the police had to step in instead.

A total of 35 green sea turtles and one lonely hawksbill turtle were found by police, who then called the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) to the scene.

All the turtles have now been sent to Ocean Park for veterinary assessment while the AFCD investigates.

Wild turtles are protected by the Wild Animals Protection Ordinance, meaning no person may hunt, disturb, sell or export the gentle reptiles without a special permit. All sea turtle species are also listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, meaning you’re a double douche if you mess with them.

Those who do could see themselves imprisoned for two years and fined HKD5 million.
