Bank exec who killed security guard in Ferrari crash jailed for 21 months

A former senior executive at Deutsche Bank executive who fatally struck a security guard with his Ferrari last June has been jailed for 21 months.

Robert Ebert, 49, was also suspended from driving for five years at the District Court yesterday.

The Briton told police that his brake was unresponsive at the time of his arrest. However, Judge Amanda Woodcock said she found no evidence of mechanical failure after examining CCTV footage of the fatal accident and reviewing expert testimonies, including a technical engineer from Ferrari’s Italian headquarters.

Woodcock said she was sure that Ebert had driven dangerously on the morning of the accident, but noted his “unblemished traffic record” and clear criminal record, Reuters reports

Ebert, who was the head of equities of Asia Pacific at Deutsche Bank, crashed his Ferrari 458 Spider in a residential car park on Austin Road West while driving to work on the morning of June 9, 2015.

He had put the vehicle in race mode to hear the “roar of the engine” magnified in a “tunnel-like road”, the court heard yesterday.

The car, which at one point reached a speed of 90 kilometres per hour in a 30-kilometre-per-hour zone, struck 53-year-old security guard Ku Lap-chi. Ku sustained multiple fractures and was rushed to hospital, where he died from his injuries.
