Rurik Jutting found guilty of two counts of murder, jailed for life

British banker Rurik Jutting has been jailed for life after a Hong Kong jury found him guilty of murdering Sumarti Ningsih and Seneng Mujiasih today.

After six hours of closed-door deliberation, the jury of four women and five men unanimously found Jutting guilty of two counts of murder, a crime which carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment in Hong Kong.

The 31-year-old Briton had denied the charges, instead pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of “diminished responsibility”.

The defence said Jutting would apply to serve his sentence in a British prison, where prisoners with life sentences can apply for parole after serving a pre-determined amount of time in jail.
