Astronomy lovers all over the world are buzzing about the “supermoon” due next Monday, the biggest and brightest of its kind since 1948. A supermoon is what occurs when a full or new moon coincides with its perigee, a.k.a. the point in its orbit when it’s closest to the Earth.
Thrillingly, we’ll actually have a shot at copping a good, long look at the gorgeous phenomenon as the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has predicted clear skies for the momentous occasion.
And what an easily enjoyed occasion it’ll be! It’s not like we’re attempting to view an eclipse, which requires special glasses or a repurposed colander, or trying our hand at stargazing, which calls for binoculars and/or a telescope.
Nope, you just need to look up — and probably not far — because this supermoon’s going to be (to use a scientific term) ginormous.
Needless to say, we’re pumped. Over the moon, even.
The HKO website says the moon will be closest to Earth at 7:21pm on Monday, but the prime moon-gazing time will be over two hours later, at 9:52pm, when it will appear fullest.
To capitalise on the romance that inevitably comes with a full moon (and a super one at that), why not take a date to a vantage point like a rooftop bar (if you’re fancy) or a park (if you’re outdoorsy) for your very own Bruce Almighty moment?
