John Tsang resigns as Financial Secretary to reportedly run for C.E.: local media

After months of speculation over whether he’d run for Chief Executive, John Tsang has resigned from his longtime post as Finance Secretary, local media reports.

At around noon, i-Cable News reported that Tsang had tendered his resignation, citing a source close to the matter. At 12:53pm, the government confirmed the news, and stated that Chief Executive CY Leung had already notified central government of Tsang’s resignation.

The news comes just days after Leung declared that he would not be running for re-election, citing personal reasons.

Tsang, 65, has yet to formally announce his candidacy for the March election. Over the last year, Tsang has consistently topped opinion polls on potential candidates. Other figures expected to run include retired judge Woo Kwok-hing, pro-establishment lawmaker Regina Ip, and former LegCo president Jasper Tsang.
