Bus driver says he was ‘dizzy’ at the time of Lam Tin accident that killed 1 person and injured 18

The bus driver at the helm of a Citybus which overturned on Saturday – claiming the life of one passenger and injuring another 18 – has told police he felt faint at the time of the tragic accident.

The driver, a 61-year-old man surnamed Man, told police that he has a history of high blood pressure and felt “dizzy” just before losing control of the double-decker bus, Oriental Daily reports. Man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death.

At around 8:52pm on Saturday, the 681 Citybus from Ma On Shan to Central was travelling along Lei Yue Mun Road, near Lam Tim MTR Station, when it crashed into road barriers and flipped onto its side.

One passenger, a 42-year-old woman Chung, who was on the bus with her husband, sustained serious head injuries and was certified dead on the scene. A total of 18 other people were injured to varying degrees.

Out of the injured, 13 people required hospitalisation, and three (all of whom were female) were reported to be seriously injured.

Man, who was taken into police custody on the scene, passed both breathalyser and drug tests, according to the SCMP. The vehicle in question is reported to be five and a half years old and had passed an inspection exactly one week prior to the accident.
