Cut, a new lifestyle website based in Seattle, Washington, just released a video on the history of Filipina Beauty. It’s the sixth episode of its series ‘100 Years of Beauty,’ which tackles how a particular country’s idea of beauty has evolved or changed through the years. Needless to say, the video also serves as a short lesson on history.

The Philippine episode starts at the turn of the century, during the Spanish-American War and follows how ‘mestizas’ and white skin became our standard of beauty.

“After the U.S. took control of the country, American trends began to heavily influence Filipino beauty,” notices Helen Regan on Time.com. She notes that ‘mestiza’ actresses set the red lips and rosy cheeks trend post-war, when Philippine cinema boomed.

The video, which is under two minutes, follows the evolution of Filipina beauty to the current decade, 2010, in which K-Pop influences could not be denied. It’s all very interesting, really; reckon, this is how history should be taught.

It was only uploaded yesterday, May 19, and already enjoys more than 262,284 views on YouTube.
