Pro-Democracy Bono: 30 Hong Kong lawyers to offer arrested Occupy Central protesters free legal aid

A group of about 30 mostly local lawyers have said that they are prepared to offer pro bono legal aid to any Occupy Central protesters who get arrested. Alvin Leung, the organiser of the group, said that they would be on hand to “deal with the firefighting at the end”.

Denis Kwok, one of the lawyers who is also a member of the group that represents lawyers in LegCo, said more and more are signing up for the scheme, reports the Wall Street Journal.

In June, hundreds of lawyers marched in protest of a white paper issued by China’s State Council that said that Hong Kong judges and judicial personnel were required to “love the country”.

Martin Lee, a lawyer and important pro-democracy politician, said at a recent Foreign Correspondents’ Club event that Hong Kong judges, “have taken the oath of allegiance to serve Hong Kong, they have not taken an oath to serve the interests of China. Supposing there’s a conflict of interest over the Basic Law, over political development, what does a judge do? He is now required by the white paper to look after the interests of China. That is the problem.”
