‘Beaten’ political activist to be detained after hospital visit, students demand police commissioner resignation

Civic Party member Ken Tsang, who was allegedly brutally beaten by multiple police officers during last night’s Occupy Hong Kong clashes, will be escorted to the police station as soon as he’s out of hospital.

The party’s vice-chairwoman, Tanya Chan, told the press this afternoon that Tsang will be taken to North Point police station after his medical examination at Ruttonjee Hospital. She insisted her first priority will be to secure Tsang’s bail so he can rest and recover.

Following X-rays and a CT scan, it has been confirmed that Tsang has no broken bones, and there is currently no sign of internal bleeding. He does, however, have scratches, bruises and large circular welts – which appear to have been made by a heavy object (according to Chan) – stretching from his hips to his head.

Chan, who also acts as Tsang’s lawyer, confirmed that a complaint has been lodged against the police. At least eight protesters are thought to have been escorted to Ruttonjee hospital by police since last night’s clashes, which saw 45 people arrested.

The Hong Kong Federation of Students has also released a statement condemning the police operation on Lung Wo Road this morning, insisting that it was not necessary for the police to resort to violence, calling for the resignation of police commissioner Andy Tsang Wai-hung and demanding an investigation.

If anything, however, the students seem even more determined to stand their ground. “Unswayed by authority’s power, HKFS will continue to fight hand in hand with citizens – to advance together for a real election,” the statement said.

Footage of Tsang’s alleged attack was released by TVB this morning. It appears to show the Civic Party member being carried in handcuffs to a deserted location before being repeatedly kicked and punched by at least six police officers.
