404 Page Not Found: Coconuts is officially blocked in China

It looks like our humble site has been noticed by China – or found by the bots trawling the web for any slightest reference to the protests in Hong Kong – and will be proudly joining the ranks of BBC, Instagram, Gmail and other websites blocked in China since the beginning of Occupy Central.

God forbid the mainland sees our Instagram photos of our desserts (even if they use #nofilter)!

Other websites, like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter have been blocked in China for years, through civil unrest or rest.

All of Coconuts Hong Kong’s sister sites, including Coconuts Singapore, Coconuts Manila, and Coconuts Bangkok, have also been censored by the Great Firewall of China (said to be visible from cyberspace!), for whatever reason.

Jokes aside, though us being blocked in the mainland won’t affect our operations in Hong Kong, press freedom here is under threat. The Hong Kong Journalists Association called 2014 the “darkest year in decades” for press freedom in Hong Kong. We vow to continue bringing you the news, from the wacky to the serious.

Friends in China, keep paying for those VPN subscriptions.
