1,399 jaywalkers nabbed in police crackdown

Why did the chicken cross the road? We don’t know, but if it was in Hong Kong and paying no heed to the traffic lights, it definitely got slammed with a summons from the police.

The police gave 1,399 summonses and 154 verbal warnings during a weeklong crackdown from Jan. 21 – 27.

That’s almost exactly 200 per day (199.85 on average, to be precise), which probably means the officers went back to their other, actual policing work once they reached the daily quota.

Of the summonses, 1,140 were given for “failing to comply with a light signal”, 114 for “crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway”, and 60 for jaywalking “on any roads”.

The police also handed out 8,500 publicity leaflets at 241 different locations. This is clearly a great use of government resources and of trees.

“Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of HKD2,000,” said a police spokesperson.
