Coconuts HK Weekly Planner: May 18-24

Monday

Fergus Henderson, the pioneer of nose-to-tail cooking (in which no part of the animal is wasted), will be gracing Blue Butcher with his presence today and tomorrow. Anthony Bourdain himself, who said he’d want his last meal to be at Henderson’s famous London restaurant St John, called the culinary genius “the most influential chef in the world”… and who are we to argue? More details.

In other Monday food news, tonight is the last in the series of Chef Talks at the Fringe Club. The final grill-side chat comes courtesy of Olivier Elzer, of Seasons by Olivier Elzer. More details.

Tuesday

The Women’s Foundation and the British Council present Jo Farrell, a Hong Kong-based photographer in conversation with Anna Dickie, managing editor of Ocula Hong Kong. The discussion will centre around Jo’s newly launched book Living History: Bound Feet Women of China and will touch upon art, culture and the pressure women feel to conform to beauty standards. More details.

Wednesday

The Cat Street Gallery welcomes Australian artist Waldemar Kolbusz to Hong Kong tonight with his first solo exhibition “Aerial”. After resigning as an accountant (BORING!) in 1997, Kolbusz ended up driving solo in the deserts of Arizona and Nevada. His shift in thinking to the free and abstract was inspired by this journey and subsequent travels around the world. More details.

Thursday

Hear the haunting works of Ivor Gurney – a prolific poet and composer who was much overlooked until he died in 1937 from tuberculosis at the tender age of 47 – in a play written by another creative genius Piers Gray, who resided in Hong Kong. More details.

Featuring our city’s famous organised chaos, natural landscapes and modern architecture, American photographer Peter Steinhauer’s award-winning “Hong Kong – Surface Unseen” series exposes the elements of the sprawl that are ever present but often go unnoticed. The exhibition opens tonight at Contemporary by Angela Li in Sheung Wan. More details.

To celebrate the opening of its flagship store in Causeway Bay next Thursday, Cali-Mex – the Mexican juggernaut no-one can keep up with – will be serving margaritas and churros from 12 noon onwards… completely free of charge! Unless you’re having a baby, dead or in prison, you should be there. More details.

Friday

The Affordable Art Fair is back for its third year, hanging the work of emerging artists against household names at the HKEC all weekend. More than 130 galleries from across the world will attract 30,000 visitors to talks, workshops and thousands of original pieces ranging in price from HKD1,000 to HKD100,000. More details.

Saturday

“MUSIC FOR NEPAL” is a full-weekend music marathon at the city’s worst-kept-secret venue, Hidden Agenda. Artists will be performing a wide range of music styles, including digeridoo, hardpan, drum jam, indie pop, hip-hop, rock, acoustic, heavy metal and more to raise money for the victims of the Nepal earthquakes. More details.

Get yourself mentally ready for the huge dragon boating extravaganza on June 20 with the Warm Up Races today on Stanley Main Beach. The drums will be banging and the oars will be splashing in what is set to be a day of competition just as fierce as the real thing. More details.

Sunday

If you’re a fan of Jumanji or have some other completely inexplicable reason for wanting board games to come to life around you, clear your schedule today. As part of the “Jockey Club Community Arts Biennale 2015: Fly the Flyover01 Exhibition” (which could really do with an acronym), a huge snakes & ladders game will be available for your amusement at Fly the Flyover01 in Kwun Tong. More details.
