Sometimes you’ve got to start with bad news to get good news.
The bad news was that on June 28, 65-year-old retiree Suen Tak-fui was arrested by Hong Kong’s Food and Environmental Hygiene Department for fixing his neighbours’ bicycles on a pavement in Sha Tin.
What a dick, right?
The good news is, all charges against him were dropped today. Hurrah!
According to the SCMP, who were at the court hearing, a jubilant Suen celebrated with a headstand outside the court, as you do when you’re 65.
The prosecution announced that it had decided to drop charges of illegal hawking and causing an obstruction against Suen, who had all of his gear seized last month.
The court heard how the retired factory worker was occupying just three square-metres of pavement (although that’s loads of space in Hong Kong) to conduct free repairs on residents’ bikes for around five years.
He was arrested, however, when enforcement officers saw a customer pass him HKD10.
Suen, who was represented by a kindhearted lawyer for free and supported by the Hong Kong Cycling Alliance, said he will now continue in his honourable occupation.
