Truck driver Cheung Man-leung, 70, was denied bail yesterday as the death toll of Friday’s tragic minibus accident reached five.
Cheung has been charged with one count of dangerous driving, causing death. He was not asked to enter a plea at the Tuen Mun Magistrates’ Court. The case has been adjourned until Feb. 16, 2016, to allow time for the examination of DNA reports and the autopsies of the deceased.
The collision occurred at around 4:42pm on Friday at the intersection of Kam Sheung Road and Tung Wui Road.
The crash has left five dead and 13 injured, at least one of which – Hong Kong female footballer Gigi Tang, 24 – is still in critical condition, reports the SCMP.
The fatal accident between the minibus and a truck claimed the lives of Tang Tung-hei, 58, Chan Kwai-chun, 53, Chan Kwai-ying and three-month-old baby girl Cheung Tsz-kiu. The girl’s grandmother, 55-year-old Cheng Tsui-lin, became the latest victim yesterday.
“I was so scared when I arrived at the scene. I was afraid of losing my daughter,” said Tang Pak-ming, 41, father of nine-year-old Tang Kei-yin who survived the deadly crash.
The schoolgirl’s hefty 10lb bag apparently slid on top of her, protecting her body as the bus flipped over during the collision.
After the crash, the bus driver helped Tang, who suffered only minor cuts and scratches, to safety. She later told her father that she wanted to go back and help the other people in the wreckage.
Yan Chai Hospital Board members and Chai Emergency Assistance Relief Fund have distributed HKD100,000 worth of tokens of solidarity to assist some of the victims.
