Victim of 7-Eleven stabbing in Yau Ma Tei dies from injuries, case reclassified as murder

The man who was stabbed in his 7-Eleven shop last week over a packet of crisps has succumbed to his injuries and died, according to a statement from 7-Eleven Hong Kong.

Cheng Ka-piu, aged 38, was working behind the counter of his shop last Tuesday evening when a customer reportedly stole a packet of crisps and some tissues, and began to eat the snacks outside.

The pair then got into a physical confrontation — which was recorded by surveillance cameras in the shop — during which the customer appeared to stab Cheng in the chest with a fruit knife, before running away.

Cheng was hospitalised later that evening and remained in critical condition until yesterday afternoon, when he died at 4:48pm, Apple Daily reports.

A police press release stated that a post-mortem examination would be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.

The case, which was formerly classified as attempted murder and shop theft, has now been reclassified as murder and shop theft, in light of Cheng’s death.

The 38-year-old is survived by his wife and his infant child.

A 32-year-old Vietnamese-Canadian man was arrested in connection to the case on Wednesday evening, and remains in police custody.

A hearing has been scheduled for May 20, pending further police investigation and legal advice.
