Hong Kong hiker reported missing in Japan found dead after 5 days

A Hong Kong man who was described by friends as an “experienced hiker” was found dead after going missing for five days in Japan, reports say.

Chan Ka-yu was reportedly travelling alone, and had posted a Facebook status at 3.10pm Feb. 6 showing that he was at a lake in Nikko after hours of hiking in Tochigi prefecture.

According to the SCMP, 29-year-old Chan said he was “just going for a warm-up, […] did not wear ice crampons, and got into trouble as he didn’t expect [so much snow]”.

Chan was reported missing at 11pm on Feb. 6, after he failed to return to his hotel. After two days of fruitless searching, Chan’s family was notified, and flew to Japan to find him, but were then informed that his body had been found.

An ex-colleague of Chan’s said that he was an “avid traveller” and “experienced hiker” who had climbed in the Himalayas.
