Woman, 31, gets mercury poisoning after using face cream

The government is urging the public to stop slapping on sketchy beauty products after a 31-year-old woman got ill from using a cosmetic product that contained excessive mercury.

After the woman noticed her legs were swelling up, she was admitted to hospital on May 29. Her urine samples showed high mercury levels and she was diagnosed with mercury poisoning. She was discharged on June 1 and is currently in a stable condition.

She had been using a cosmetic cream for several months prior to her hospital visit. The product, labelled “Collagen Night Cream”, is apparently produced by “Advocate Health Hairdressing New Ideas”, and was found to contain exactly 6,411 times more mercury than the acceptable level.

“Chronic exposure to mercury can cause damage to the nervous system and kidneys. Symptoms may include tremors, irritability, insomnia, deterioration of memory, difficulty in concentration, impaired hearing and vision, and change in the ability to taste,” said a department of health spokesperson.

“In the most severe cases, renal failure may occur.”

Yes, we hear you, but how smooth would our skin become?
