Coconuts Hong Kong Weekly Planner: August 3-9

Monday

In case you missed humanitarian photographer Lam Duc Hien’s stunning work at the charitable “Night for Nepal” exhibition in June, here’s a chance for you to do better. From August 3 to 29, one of the Vietnamese-Laotian photographer’s earliest series, “Tibetans”, will be on display at the Culture Club Gallery in SoHo, with all sale proceeds once again going to the Nepal Youth Foundation for both long-term and immediate earthquake relief work. More details.

Tuesday

PechaKucha (Japanese for “chit-chat”) is an evening of mini talks with a twist: speakers focus their presentations on 20 images, and are given only 20 seconds for each picture.  You can catch the latest PechaKucha Night right here at Hong Kong’s XXX Club tonight. More details.

Wednesday

Do you like paying to get inside a club, only to have your eardrums sonically abused by a shitty DJ? Well, neither do the folks at Mahalo Tiki Lounge, who are putting on a FREE party next Wednesday with the up-and-coming DJ Crackazat, for what is bound to be an evening of eardrum caressing (not in a creepy way). More details.

Thursday

Think classical music is only for boring, old farts? The appropriately titled Breaking Winds might just turn you into one. The famous all-female bassoon quartet will be performing their classical-pop crossover tunes at the Fringe Club Thursday night for what is sure to be an evening of entertaining surprises. More details.

Haven’t been to an art gallery in the past year? Find out what you’ve been missing at Cat Street Gallery’s Summer Salon Show, which brings us the most significant contemporary artwork from the past 12 months. Running from August 6 to September 12, Signal 8 will look back at the gallery’s best exhibits, featuring more than 20 awesome pieces from 15 artists. More details.

Friday

If you want to literally see the music you’re dancing to (without necessarily taking any questionable substances), head over to the Heineken Green Room next Friday. That’s right, your uncle’s favourite beer is about to shake up the Hong Kong party scene with their new initiative – a “sensory music experiment”. More details.

Disco Step Child is the brainchild of locals DJ Drafus and Ben Ku, with their current sound more focussed on house, bass and techno. DJ Drafus has opened for De La Soul and Phoenix and regularly plays at Clockenflap with Uptown Rockers. The duo is credited for bringing Hong Kong’s electronic scene and nightlife to another level. In the past, Ku has played events for brands like Louis Vuitton and Calvin Klein. More details.

Saturday

A massive beach party on a hot Saturday afternoon? We’d be so there… if we only knew where the hell it’s gonna be. Rewind HK, mildly famous for its pop-up rooftop events, is bringing a new beach party series to Hong Kong, starting with “Waves” on Saturday, August 8. Other than the date and time, virtually nothing else has been shared about the event, because there’s just something so alluring about not knowing where a party is until the day before… apparently. More details.

If you’re looking for something different, this eclectoclash event hosted by Cosmic Chauffeur might be up your alley. The gig is a mix of alternative music and spoken word performances, perfect for the person looking for a quirky evening. More details.

Singapore native Hanjin Tan has worked as a producer for more than 11 years and collaborated with many stars, including Rain, Jay Chou, Andy Lau and Wang Leehom, just to name a few. Throughout his career he has produced more than 400 songs. His own debut, “Raw Jazz”, sold rapidly and topped charts in Hong Kong and Japan. More details.

Sunday

Can’t get enough yoga? How about five hours’ worth of outdoor sessions taught by some of the city’s most admired instructors? You’ll get exactly that at the OMFESTHK outdoor yoga festival on Sunday, August 9, when five back-to-back sessions will be held at the Central Harbourfront Event Space for free. More details.

Dubbed the Freespace Happening, the Sunday, Aug. 9 festival at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade will consist of an array of arts performances, sports activities, and fun workshops featuring and targeted towards our city’s youth. For starters, the Nike City Jam Skateboarding Competition will take place at the festival, with Hong Kong’s best boarders performing their coolest stunts for prizes (and massive props). More details.
